As promised and specially for my friend Vicki from sandtosnow.com, in this post I will explain in simple english what is RSS and why it is so important for bloggers.
First what is RSS? Rich Site Summary is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Visually RSS symbol looks like the top image featured, some bloggers just write RSS (like mine):
In other words, news related, new posts, bloggers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it. RSS allows you to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in.
Benefits: You save time by not visiting each site individually, you ensure your privacy by not joining the E-newsletter but only the RSS. The number of sites offering RSS feeds is growing rapidly.
Feed Reader or News Aggregator software allow you to grab the RSS feeds from various sites and display them for you to read and use.
A variety of RSS readers are available for different platforms. Some popular feed readers include Amphetadesk (Windows, Linux, Mac), FeedReader (Windows), and NewsGator (Windows – integrates with Outlook). There are also a number of web-based feed readers available. My Yahoo, Bloglines, and Google Reader are popular web-based feed readers.
Once you have your Feed Reader, it is a matter of finding sites that syndicate content and adding their RSS feed to the list of feeds your Feed Reader checks. Many sites display a small icon with the acronyms RSS, XML, or RDF to let you know a feed is available.
Women love tech has finally their RSS feed, link you see on the right hand side bar (in pink subscribe to Women Love Tech), I used FeedBurner, it’s free and easy to use, thats why I put a link to their website on my site to thank them for their work.
So what happen if you click to Women Love Tech RSS? It will take you to this page, where you have to give your email address (it’s completely private I don’t have access to your email address)
After you will give your email address and confirm it, then, every time I updated my content with a new post and put it on FeedBurner, you will received an email, it’s easy!
To try it, suscribe to my RSS.
Special message to all the people who asked me where is my RSS – it’s positioned on the right hand side bar, you need to click to Subscribe with Women Love Tech
I hope this post was handy and clear, you are welcome to leave a comment :)
